what is physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a “Hands On” health care profession which focuses on the treatment of impairments, injuries and disabilities and the promotion of mobility, functional ability, movement potential and quality of life through examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical intervention.

Physiotherapists are first line medical practitioners who use various techniques to help the muscles and joints perform to their full potential following injury or an operation. Physiotherapists also work with patients suffering with certain disabilities or medical conditions to improve their range of motion and quality of life. This is done with the use of manipulative therapies and various other modalities, e.g. exercise, electrotherapy, soft tissue and joint mobilization.

Physiotherapy is multi-dimensional and can treat a vast variety of conditions. Primarily it focuses on the restoration and rehabilitation of the circulatory and musculoskeletal systems; it can, however be used to treat conditions as diverse as sports injuries, arthritis and respiratory problems.
